Impacted Tooth Exposure: In Conjunction With Your Orthodontic Treatment

The purpose of this treatment is to expose a tooth that has not erupted normally in the mouth.

About This Treatment

The diagnosis of an impacted tooth can be made when a tooth remains buried in the jawbone, often as a result of a lack of space or abnormal orientation. The purpose of surgical exposure is, therefore, to help the impacted tooth erupt so that orthodontic treatment can correct the position of the teeth in the dental arch.

Sometimes, a chain can be bonded to the tooth during exposure to allow for forced eruption using orthodontic traction supervised by an orthodontist.

The Procedure

A clinical examination is performed before beginning any type of treatment. If it has been determined that the exposure of an impacted tooth is the best option for you, the procedure will be explained in detail. In some cases, 3D imaging may be necessary to facilitate the surgical procedure. Your periodontist will inform you if this is the case.

1

The Day of the Procedure

Your periodontist will open the gum to expose the affected tooth and encourage it to erupt in the mouth. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia.

2

Postoperative Care

Postoperative care instructions will be explained to you during your appointment. Following these instructions carefully is essential to facilitate the healing process.

3

Follow-Up

A follow-up appointment is necessary to remove the stitches and assess the progress of healing.
