About This Treatment
Gum grafts are dental procedures designed to increase and strengthen the gum line surrounding the base of the tooth. For this procedure, palate tissue is removed and then placed at the base of the tooth. The primary goal is to prevent, cover, or halt gum recession and protect exposed tooth roots, helping to avoid tooth loss.
Gum grafts are recommended for patients who have experienced gum tissue loss around their teeth, which can be caused by periodontal disease (gum disease), aggressive brushing, or other factors. This procedure may be considered when gum recession leads to one or more of the following issues:
- Weakening of the tooth
- Increased risk of root decay
- Cosmetic concerns
